The Bulgarian prime minister Sergei Stanishev supported the candidature of Jose Manuel Barroso for a second term for the post of chairman of the European commission.

He has always supported Bulgaria’s EU membership, the PM gave his reasons. 

Stanishev added that on this stage Bulgaria was not considering the name of its new European commissioner but insisted on getting a substantial department such as the energy one.

The prime minister commented also on the letter of the Dutch minister on European affairs in which he demanded a safeguard clause against Bulgaria: “The reforms in Bulgaria are heading in the right direction and everything necessary is being done to cope with the weaknesses, shown by our European partners”.
